At Altar.io, we build perfect teams—not perfect individuals. We believe true balance is found in the diversity of backgrounds, skills, and unique energies each person brings. Everyone contributes in their own way, and it’s through these varied experiences and perspectives that we achieve clarity and harmony.
We believe Altarions should be passionate explorers, always pushing the boundaries of their work and personal growth. Our mission is to embrace the unknown, take on challenges never faced before, and, ultimately, leave the world better than we found it.
We expect Altarions to be Collaborative Thinkers. At Altar.io, you’re encouraged to think freely, speak openly, and—most importantly—listen actively and embrace being challenged. These are the foundations of meaningful, productive collective debate.
We know it’s a cliché, but at Altar.io, 360º Happiness means something real:
- - Work-Life Balance: If you consistently need to work more than 8 hours a day, something’s wrong—let’s fix it.
- - Life Outside Work: True happiness is found in the life you live beyond your desk.
- - Energy Matters: Happiness (or the lack of it) is contagious—when you’re happy, you inspire those around you.
This core mantra shapes our everyday work and reflects in everything we do:
- - True Ownership: We take full ownership of our clients’ projects, treating them as if they were our own.
- - Mutual Belonging: At Altar.io, you’re not just part of the team—you’re part of something bigger. And for those who commit to the journey, Altar.io can also belong to you through our equity programme for long-term collaborators.

Career Plan
A place to grow
Altar.io is not simply a place to work in.
This is a place where you have a future.
And we're fully invested in seeing you achieve your every dream.
Career Path options
- All our careers start by going through 3 levels common to all paths - Junior; Intermediate; Senior;
- Depending on how you want to grow, you can then choose to become:
- – An Expert: focusing on everything you got to become an elite performer;
- - A Manager: focusing on managing projects or teams, and becoming more engaged with the overall progress of the company.
Our career plan meetings typically happen twice a year and allow you and your manager to have a deep assessment of your progress.

The Recruitment Process
-
As it grows, Altar consistently needs to expand its engineering team. Because of this, we usually have evergreen fullstack, backend, and data positions available, and we've been lucky to hire several new developers lately.
-
- The recruitment team will assess your profile and within 2 to 3 workdays give you an answer (be it positive or negative). If we want to go ahead, we'll send you an email to arrange a first conversation. If not, we'll explain why you didn't progress in the recruitment process.
-
One of our recruiters. We’re made of flesh and bone, we’re not AI. Unless we live in a simulation and we are unaware of our true nature ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
- Your annual salary is divided into 14 parts: 12 monthly salaries and two extra ones (Christmas and Summer pay). These two extra salaries are subdivided into 12 parts and paid with each month's salary. You also receive a 10,20-euro daily meal allowance per work day. It’s credited to a debit card that you can use in restaurants, grocery stores, supermarkets, etc. Finally, we also offer a legal, tax-free allowance of 11 euros per month for telework expenses.
-
English is the language we use internally to communicate with everyone. However, if you are in a meeting with Portuguese-speaking people only, and you happen to speak Portuguese, you can use it. If you do not speak Portuguese, there's no problem, everyone will speak English for better understanding.
-
We are a certified Tech Visa company. The process is easier when the candidate has all the requirements for this type of Visa, but it’s best if the candidate has all the documentation prepared and available at the time of application to make the process as efficient as possible. We know that Visa issues can be time-consuming, so the more the candidate is prepared and informed about this part, the better.
-
We prefer that the entire team is, from day 1, already here in Portugal.
If you live abroad, once we make you an offer we expect you to start the relocation process at once - and we'll help you, to the best of our abilities - so that you can move to Portugal and start working with us ASAP! -
If you’re successful in your recruitment process with us, we’ll make you an offer. To be fair to everyone who joins us, the salary is calculated based on the intersection between the experience level we see in you and the corresponding values we have defined in our Salary Benchmark table. This table, by the way, is revised whenever appropriate, to stay up-to-date.
You probably noticed that our job posts list a salary range. This range covers the levels we’re considering for that role. For example, consider a role like Fullstack Developer. This is an intermediate-level position and within “intermediate” we have different sub-levels, and we grab the lower and the highest salary values to determine the salary range. In any case, if you apply to this role and we realize, at the end of our recruitment process, that you are senior, and not intermediate, we’ll offer you a senior position (with a senior-level salary).
-
Once you apply, we will evaluate your profile, and if it makes sense, we will schedule a first conversation (a People Interview). After that, we will send your profile to the Hiring Manager, who will check and schedule a Technical Conversation (for development roles, there’s also a challenge for you to perform at home). Once we have the technical phase secured, the last step will be a cultural interview with our CEO; if successful, you’ll get our offer!
-
You can find a full breakdown of the technologies we work with on our Tech Page.
-
You can check our benefits and perks here.
-
If your position includes a technical challenge, your recruiter will send you its instructions and you’ll have to complete it at home, within 5 days and then send it back to be reviewed by our engineering team. The challenge allows us to understand how you think and how you tackle a technical need. Typically, candidates take between 3 to 6 hours to complete it, depending on the level of care they give (thorough testing, careful implementation, etc.). Good luck!
-
We try to be as effective as possible, but please remember we are only humans. If everything goes smoothly, it’s no more than 30 days from application to offer.
-
You can, but there’s no need to as we will evaluate your profile and understand which position suits you best. In any case, in our People Interview, we will understand together how best to continue your recruitment process.
-
We provide feedback to every candidate who applies, regardless of the result.
-
The answer to that question is “It’ll depend on several factors beyond our control so we cannot give you an answer right now”, but we will be able to help you figure that out in our recruitment process, worry not! If we get to the offer stage - fingers crossed! - we’ll be able to go through all of that in detail and come up with pretty accurate values so that your payslip doesn’t have any nasty surprises.
-
Yes, we do. So far, people have joined us from Ukraine, Hungary, Italy, and Brazil. They all relocated to Portugal, though, and so would you if you were to join us.
Who We Are
-
You can find all of the information about our values and culture here.
-
We need you to be eligible to work in Portugal and live in one of our major cities (or be happy to relocate). We have a remote-first policy, but we also encourage you to join us in our informal, pet-friendly office environment in the heart of Lisbon.
Remote-first, for us, means two things:
a) you need to live in continental Portugal, but you can work 100% of the time from home.
b) we have 4 times a year a day-long, all-hands meeting, usually in or near Lisbon, and we appreciate it if all Altarions join us. If you don't live in the Greater Lisbon Area, we'll pay for your travel and accommodation -
Yes! We have our All-Hands usually once every quarter, where we spend a day outside of work, engaged in fun activities. Moreover, we have some perks like Yoga Classes and Altar Movie Nights - check out all our perks here.
-
Of course! As an Altarion, you should always feel invited to think, speak and ask questions because that's how we evolve and learn as a team.
-
We have a fully-structured career path that is personalised for each Altarion; check it out here.
-
In Tech, we are primarily focused on candidates who already have experience in backend or full-stack positions, mainly in Node for the backend and Angular/React for the frontend. If you want to know more about the current tech stack we use, please visit our tech page.
In Product, we’re mainly looking for candidates with strong experience working with external clients and who have worked in a few startups/scaleups. Extra points for those who have started their own company in the past and have ease and experience talking in public.
In Project, we’re looking for candidates who have solid experience in Project Management, specifically in SaaS, who already worked on multiple projects from different industries, who know how to track the progress of the team and help the clients understand what are the best scenarios for each stage of the project, from start to finish. Experience in software development is nice to have but not mandatory.
-
Our goal is to have at least 2 developers in each project, we don’t want people to work alone, and having team members will help the development of the project and will enhance the skills of our developers. This will always depend on the allocations and needs of our projects, but some squads can have up to 6 developers.
-
We use Agile, and each project has a Scrum Master assigned to it
-
Yes, we have a training budget for each employee, to help you continue to learn and develop new skills.
-
We are roughly 50 people, and our structure includes Operations and Management, Product, Project, Development, Content and Marketing, and People teams.
-
Check out our work page. Spoiler alert - we work with clients from different parts of the globe and all sorts of business areas!
The Onboarding Process
-
Once you accept our offer, our Admin team will talk to you and ask some questions for drafting the contract. After the contract is signed, we will invite you to spend one or two days with us in our office in Lisbon, so you get an opportunity to meet the different teams and people and gather all the materials you need to do your job.
-
- When you start your adventure with Altar, we assign a Buddy who will help you go through the different situations that can happen in the first months, from documentation to tools, and platforms. Besides, after the first few days and meetings with the teams, a plan will be drawn up with goals to help you navigate here. These goals may change depending on your learning speed and will be adapted so that you can evolve sustainably and efficiently.
-
At this time, Altar.io does not offer new employees a relocation package
-
We don’t have such a service at the moment. What we can do, informally, is suggest websites where you can find accommodation and help you review the options you find.
